From lingua at geez.org Thu Jan 11 10:18:58 2007 From: lingua at geez.org (Daniel Yacob) Date: Thu Jan 11 10:19:06 2007 Subject: [am-nlp] New Suggested Research Section Message-ID: Greetings All, I hope everyone has had a Happy New Year and a Merry Christmas or two. Samuel Eyassu and I have put together two sections on the Amharic NLP website under the research section: http://nlp.amharic.org/research/research-topics/ For the benefit of Amharic NLP research, please seriously consider adding your own information to these sections, some explanation follows: The "Suggested Research" page is there to offer topics for students, primarily at AAU, that they may want to consider for their graduate thesis and for undergraduate senior projects. These are just suggested topics where we know the area to be in need of attention. It would then be up to the student and his faculty adviser to determine if the topic is suitable for a graduate or under-graduate investigation and develop the topic into a proposal. Each semester some number of us receive email from students asking for topic suggestions and looking for an external adviser to work with. A process that largely relies on word-of-mouth. Keeping topic suggestions and contacts on a web page should help more students get in contact with more advisers and great ideas. Suggesting a topic, however, does not mean that you are volunteering to be an adviser, but providing contact information is encouraged for students or faculty in need of additional clarification. The other new section is on "Ongoing and Past Research" which is aimed at making research topics already underway known to fellow researchers and students. Particularly where papers have not yet been published. In this way to help also in research topic selection, avoid duplication of effort, and to promote the work and find volunteers if needed. Thank You, have a great '99/'007, and please add to the research pages! Daniel Yacob & Samuel Eyassu
